Brian Gibson had this to say: “After being off the bike since competing in the 2012 AMA Supersport race at Road America it definitely felt good to be out on the track again. My body might disagree, but it is wonderful getting out there and twisting the grip on these new 2013 Triumph 675R’s nonetheless. Team RidersDiscount.com and Jake Holden Racing are excited to get on the grid for another action-packed weekend in the Daytona SportBike class at Laguna Seca. With the recent addition of Cameron Beaubier to the Team RidersDiscount.com Jake Holden Racing garage, there will now be two bikes in RidersDiscount.com colors on the AMA DSB grid. And, to make things especially exciting for everyone, Jake is making his return to the AMA’s premier American Superbike class this coming weekend!

After testing both of the RidersDiscount.com-built and prepared Superbikes; the Yamaha YZF-R1 and the BMW S1000RR – Jake has decided that the BMW will be better suited to Laguna’s undulated and technical layout. His decision comes after two days of testing at Grattan Raceway and Gingerman Raceway, which are both a quick drive from the RidersDiscount.com headquarters. Each track provides a different emphasis on setup and after many laps riding both bikes, it was determined that, at least for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, that the RidersDiscount.com BMW S1000RR would be the machine of choice.

Jake Holden: “At first, I was really focused on the Yamaha YZF-R1 because I’ve ridden one – Ben Bostrom’s, and I really liked it, so I was just going into this test thinking that I’d be racing the Yamaha at Laguna Seca. But I gave in and wanted to do a couple laps on the BMW just to say I did it. I got on it and the package on that bike is really impressive, it just suits my riding style — I feel really comfortable on the bike. You can’t even really feel the electronics working, it just keeps the bike in line and I think it’s going to be a good package for Laguna Seca.

Last year at Laguna, I filled in for John Hopkins on the Monster M4 Suzuki GSX-R1000 and I led maybe a lap or two there and I felt pretty confident in myself. Now, I feel confident in going back there on the RidersDiscount.com BMW S1000RR. Hopefully, we can make some noise and spray some champagne!”

Cameron Beaubier: “I’m super excited to be going into Laguna Seca knowing that RidersDiscount.com is supporting me. I’ve seen how well Jake Holden Racing and RidersDiscount.com have worked together and I’m happy to be a part of it. Laguna is my home track, so my family and friends will be there. On Monday and Thursday of this week, Team RidersDiscount.com and Jake Holden Racing tested the RidersDiscount.com-built Yamaha YZF-R1 and BMW S1000RR superbikes at Grattan Raceway Park and Gingerman Raceway, respectively. The team got together after the AMA event at Mid-Ohio to help Jake determine which bike would be best suited for his return to the AMA American SuperBike class at the upcoming Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix weekend in Laguna Seca. The two tracks offer a sharp contrast from each other, which is ideal for testing the strengths and weaknesses of each machine. Grattan Raceway features a fast, flowing layout with many blind corners along with a few drops and rises. Gingerman, on the other hand, while mostly flat, demands a very precise line to get the fastest lap and so, puts stability under braking at a premium.

Jake remarked that the Yamaha YZF-R1 features a smooth power delivery on corner exits and a fantastic growl from the crossplane crank motor. For the BMW S1000RR, Jake’s favorite aspect was the bike’s top-end power and the unobtrusive electronics package. The positives of each bike will lend themselves well to Laguna Seca’s undulating layout and now that he’s had a chance to ride both bikes on two completely different tracks, Jake has a limited amount of time to decide which bike will work best at the California track.

Jake Holden – “I was excited to ride the RidersDiscount.com superbikes. After Mid-Ohio, which was just a devastating race for my season, I was looking forward to going riding and having fun with the RidersDiscount.com crew. And that’s exactly what we did – I got to ride a couple of kick ass superbikes that they built; the BMW S1000RR and Yamaha R1. It got my mind off of some of the things I’d been stressing about lately. Now I’m looking forward to getting on the superbike at Laguna Seca because that’s where I had my first AMA career win and I’ve always been pretty successful there.

It was a lot of fun and it was good to go back to where I started at the club level just doing trackdays with friends and people who enjoy riding and racing. Team RidersDiscount.com was on the podium in every single event they entered at Grattan Raceway Park for WERA’s first-ever Double-Header weekend. The recently repaved track was well received by all and the pace was fast with lots of action on the track. With the notably hot summer weather, tire choice critical as grip on the track surface constantly changed every day with temperatures varying from practice to the green flag. Still, Team RidersDiscount.com riders Sam Gaige, Virginie “Frenchie” Massing and Brian Gibson came away with a combined total of four wins, five second-place finishes and two third place spots on the podium. Although Gaige has been a regular with WERA for over a decade, this was his first visit to the Western Michigan track. Brian was quick straight away and it didn’t take Sam long to put his pace up at the top of the lap charts. Frenchie, another Grattan regular, found a way to take another second off her best time on her way to a win!

Sam Gaige – “It was great to finally meet the entire RidersDiscount.com crew and learn a completely new track. Brian worked with me in Friday practice to get me up to speed and his knowledge helped. The guys were telling me that it’s the only place where the locals usually keep the national-level regulars honest and I can see why! That knowledge had them [the locals] dealing with lappers better than me, which cost me a few seconds here and there. Plus there were fast guys everywhere! My Markbilt-prepared, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 ran like a champ all weekend and even though I didn’t get a win, it was the most fun I’ve had on the track in a long time!

It was easy to see that the Team RidersDiscount.com crew really know bikes and it made my weekend at this new place a lot easier. The level of hospitality was totally unexpected – I really want to go back. Plus the track layout is fantastic, there’s just nothing like it and I just want to come back here next year and get a few wins!”

Virginie Massing – “My weekend was great with a 1st place in the women’s expert class and a 3rd in Senior Superbike plus I took a second off my best time. Team RidersDiscount.com were a huge help with my Yamaha YZF-R6 and I had a great time with the whole crew. Brian Gibson (owner, RidersDiscount.com) – “It was a fun weekend for the whole team and although we didn’t have the superbike motor in the RidersDiscount.com Triumph Daytona 675, we still managed to put it on the top of the box in every race Saturday. It wasn’t all easy because, with the new pavement, we had to make some changes to the bike’s setup. Sunday’s race was shaping up to be a good one until the front end let go and I had a little crash in the bowl right after I set the fastest lap of the weekend up to that point. I gotta wonder what that last lap would have been hadn’t I fallen off. Other than that, it was really great to see Sam pick up the pace at Grattan where the locals usually rule the roost and Frenchie took over a second off her best time too. It was awesome to have three Team RidersDiscount.com bikes on the grid at our home track and I’m very satisfied with the results!”

RidersDiscount.com riders Taylor Knapp, Russell Holland, Brian Gibson & Chris Knight shared success in the WERA National event at Grattan Raceway. Taylor comes away with two wins and a second place, Russell finished second in the F1 race, Brian walks away with a win and a DNF finish and Chris pulled off a best of second place. RidersDiscount.com riders raced in almost every expert class on Sunday from F1 to both 600 classes.

#44 Knapp started his Sunday with a second place finish in A Superstock on his GSX-R1000 K7. The result could have been better had it not been for his clutch failing right after the start. Mechanical problems aside, the 21-year-old kept eventual race winner Jensen honest to the end. The 600 Superstock race would be his redemption – Taylor outgunned his main rival from the A Superstock race making a pass on the brakes into turn one and seat-hopping his ZX-6R over the Grattan Hump every lap. Taylor’s fun continued in the F1 race where his GSX-R1000 K9’s radiator was punctured by a rock and started spraying water on the front wheel. With the front sliding through every corner, Taylor held on to take the win over Jensen by 0.98 seconds.

WERA newcomer #83 Russell Holland found the Grattan layout fun but challenging in spite of the fact that it was one of the bumpiest circuit he’d ever ridden. The 25-year-old Australian came to the National event not to compete for wins, but rather, familiarize himself with the 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 in preparation for his first AMA event at Mid-Ohio. Having only visited Road Atlanta and Barber in 2004, the RidersDiscount.com team thought it best for Russell to use the WERA National event to develop the YZF-R1 to his liking. Having never ridden the Yamaha before that weekend, Russell finished 4th in the F1 expert race and placed 2nd in A Superbike.

RidersDiscount.com’s Chris Knight finished ninth in the 750 Superbike race riding a 1999 Suzuki TL1000R and was only bested in the heavyweight twins class by RidersDiscount.com’s Brian Gibson riding a 2008 Triumph Daytona 675. Brian’s weekend could have gone better hadn’t it been for a mistake in turn 2 on the final lap during the 600 Superbike race where he tucked the front battling Eddie Kraft and ruined his chances of a second place finish.
