Wear a Helmet

…and make sure it fits. Even though some states do not require riders to wear a helmet, it is proven that not wearing a helmet increases your risk for injury and even death. There are several different safety standards used to rate and certify helmets. Educate yourself on them and choose a helmet not only because it looks cool, but also for how safe it is. Invest in Proper Gear

While we are on the topic of what you should wear, we should mention appropriate riding gear. Although jeans and a t-shirt may seem like the most comfortable thing, they will not offer you much protection in the case of a crash. Assume You’re Invisible

The common response from other drives in an accident with a motorcycle is “I didn’t see them.” Regardless of whether or not they really did see you, you are best off assuming that you are invisible. Taking precautions such as wearing bright gear (such as the Nolan N40 Hi-Visibility Helmet), leaving enough stopping distance, and using your lights/breaks properly will help other drivers see you. Conduct a Pre-Ride Check

…and do it before every time you get on your bike. Check things like how much fuel you have, oil, breaks, tires, lights, etc. Conducting checks will not only help you be safe on your ride, but will also help ensure that you are inspecting your bike on a regular basis.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but the last study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that 27% of motorcyclists killed in fatal crashes had BAC’s of 0.08% or greater. Don’t put yourself or other motorists more at risk.
