Purely for protection. Where I live though, our temps average around 28C/82F all year round, even at night time it usually only goes down to 15C/60F and that is rarely.

Due to this fact, I wear a textile jacket (Motodry one), and my Wife wears a Dririder one. The feel of leather though, albeit usually heavy, is nice and gives another sense of protection more so than textile.
