What a busy week we had at Road Atlanta. We are still getting our program ironed out with having two rigs and having all our sponsored riders together but things came together nicely this weekend. We kind of had a mixed bag of results but the team is definitely gaining momentum and I believe it will continue to do so.
Jake Lewis having won at his second AMA Pro event is something special and is actually Riders Discounts first AMA National win. It was a special feeling seeing such a bright, young rising star do the job and there were smiles all around. It was also an honor to have Earl Hayden come up to me in the winner’s circle and introduce himself to me and thank Riders Discount for the support of a kid he has been grooming since he was just three years old. I would say Earl has done well is an understatement as I see Jake going all the way in this sport.
Both Cory and Benny had promising results with an unfortunate crash for each in opposite legs of the AMA DSB races. Saturday Benny impressed all running in the top three for nearly the whole race until half way through the second to last lap he lost the front end pushing hard. Benny definitely showed he has the pace to run up front. Cory had an excellent run also finishing fifth showing he is going to be there weekend and week out.
Taylor Knapp had an incredibly busy weekend trying to source a motor and fine tune his Riders Discount GSXR 1000 during the weekend. I think Taylor would have been happy if he could of started his weekend on Sunday as that is when he finally found a setting that worked and he probably had one of the best if not the best run of the weekend. Coming from 15th on the grid to nearly beating out Larry Pegram for 5th place, it was a very impressive ride.
All and all a great weekend for the team and I am looking forward to the next few rounds for the team and feeling a little nervous for my own return to the AMA Pro ranks which will take place at Road America in the AMA 600SS class. This will be my final race as I have been competing on and off for over 20 years and it’s time to enjoy one more race and then make my exit quietly. If attending that race please come by the Riders Discount pits and wish me luck, I am going to need it.
