Dynojet Power Commander V

The Power Commander V takes an already proven design and capabilities of the previous Power Commander III USB, builds on them and gives us an even easier-to-use yet more powerful fuel controller device. Physically smaller than the previous device, PC-V follows the evolutionary smaller is better trend that makes sportbikes as powerful as they are today. Faced with new competition from Bazzaz Performance Design and their Z-Fi motorcycle fuel systems, we suspect Dynojet’s hand was forced when the new kid on the block came around. While it’s nothing earth-shattering, there are a few features worth noting in the new Dynojet Power Commander, read on …

Like we said, the box is smaller, almost half the size of the Power Commander III, but what’s not readily visible is a handy add-on feature; the ability to self-tune while you ride. Dynojet’s AutoTune kit, when attached to the PC-V, almost totally negates the need for what could end up being an expensive visit to the dyno man. Another nice feature that we’ve been waiting for is the ability to make changes to the Power Commander’s map while it’s still on the bike WITHOUT the need to have the bike running or having to search for the 9v battery adaptor. While it might not seem like a big deal, this feature would have saved us a lot of trouble of scouring the paddock during the race weekend looking for accessories we should have had in the toolbox. What the Power Commander Five does NOT do, is run all eight fuel injectors that most late-model sportbikes, if you want that feature, you have to spend a little more money for the extra tune-ability for the expansion module.

The device itself has two expansion ports to accommodate an LCD unit or the AutoTune kit. There are also seven accessory inputs, they include the following:

1. Crank sensor – this is generally reserved for specialized applications in which one Dynojet module must communicate with another

2. Map select – any open/close type switch will be suitable here, which you can get at your local Radio Shack. This allows you to select between two preloaded maps. If you have an AutoTune module attached, it becomes possible to switch between the base map and the AutoTune map, on the fly so you can instantly tell the difference in performance with your “butt dyno.”

3. Quick shifter input – self-explanatory

4. Speed sensor – with a little calibration, this allows the possibility to set up fuel maps for each gear position and setup gear-dependent kill times in conjunction with the quick shifter.

5. Analog input – this nifty input accepts any 0-5v signal for integrating things like engine temperature or boost pressure into fuel mapping functions. For example, fueling can be set rich until engine temperature reaches at least 90?F, smoothing warm up.

With the integrated speed sensor, the PC-V makes it possible to build effective maps for each cylinder in each gear – theoretically making it possible for 24 individual maps to be loaded onto the device per master fuel map for maximum power output and precise throttle response. This might be left up to someone with a highly skilled dyno operator, but could well be the ticket to ultimate power output. We’ll leave that up to you.

In the box with the Power Commander, you also receive controller software that’s simple to use and Dynojet always has helpful people on hand to walk users through any technical problems they may face. Installation is a snap with OEM-style connectors. The most difficult part is probably getting to the connectors on your bike! Every Dynojet Power Commander ships with a base map, that is, it does not modify the bike’s fueling signals. You can go onto Dynojet’s website and download custom maps most suited to your bike’s style, see a professional motorcycle dynamometer operator and have it tuned or, get Dynojet’s AutoTune kit to get the most from your PC-V.

However you choose to set up your Power Commander, you can be assured improved throttle response, increased engine output, and with a proper tune – smooth, linear power output that’ll make riding your bike even more enjoyable.
